CATL: MASS PRODUCTION OF NEW LIMNFEPO4 BATTERIES IN THE SECOND HALF OF 2022

On July 13, some media reported that the lithium manganese iron phosphate batteries of CATL, Xinwangda and EVE Lithium Energy have passed the battery pilot test in the first half of this year, and are sending samples to car companies for testing, while CATL plans to mass-produce new lithium iron manganese phosphate batteries in the second half of this year.

In November last year, CATL spent 410 million yuan to become the largest shareholder of Litai Lithium Energy, a lithium iron manganese phosphate material manufacturer, holding 60% of its shares.

Lithium iron phosphate batteries are currently in the limelight. Since July last year, the monthly loading of domestic lithium iron phosphate batteries has exceeded that of ternary batteries for 12 consecutive months. In the first half of this year, the domestic market share of lithium iron phosphate batteries was close to 59%, far exceeding that of ternary batteries, which accounted for 41%. However, with the development of lithium iron phosphate batteries today, the energy density is close to the "ceiling", and the room for improvement is quite limited.

Lithium iron manganese phosphate is a new type of cathode material obtained by adding part of manganese element on the basis of lithium iron phosphate, so it is called an upgraded version of lithium iron phosphate. As an upgraded version, the energy density can be increased by about 15%, and With a higher voltage platform, it may be compatible with technologies such as ultra-high voltage fast charging in the future, which is expected to provide higher cruising range for new energy vehicles.

However, lithium manganese phosphate has poor electrical conductivity, difficult processing technology routes, and poor kinetic performance. It will lose capacity and reduce cycle performance during charging and discharging. Therefore, lithium iron manganese phosphate batteries also have a shortcoming of poor cycle times . Future technological breakthroughs It is expected to be close to the level of lithium iron phosphate batteries.

It is worth mentioning that Tesla CEO Elon Musk has expressed interest in manganese-based cathode batteries. He has always believed that manganese has great development potential, and Tesla has also been exploring, hoping to use it in batteries. more manganese material is used in If the "Ning Wang" lithium iron manganese phosphate battery is mass-produced, will Tesla's domestic models be the first to carry it?

Another source said that BYD's Fudi battery also began to purchase lithium iron manganese phosphate materials in small batches this year, and it is still in the internal research and development stage. BYD responded by saying, "There will be research on various materials of batteries."
